5th gear squeal.
Hi all, I'm new here and new to riding. I just bought my first bike, 98 v-star 650, from a friend. The bike runs well, as far as I can tell. However, when I change into 5th gear when I am below 50 MPH there is a loud squeal coming from the left side of the bike. My buddy, the guy I bought it from, said that it is a problem with all v-stars, and that the cause is that when running at lower speeds in 5th gear it puts too much stress on the bearings in the transmission.

Has anyone else heard of this, and should I be worried? Is it an easy fix, something a new rider could do?

Thanks.

RE: 5th gear squeal.
It's loud enough that I can hear it mingled with the sound of the engine and the aftermarket pipes.

RE: 5th gear squeal.
It's more than likely the gear tooth cut that Yamaha has in the transmission and clutch. These motors are noisy for sure but pretty reliable. I'd recommend taking it in if it gets worse or the ride doesn't feel right.

The guy I bought it from recommended that I don't shift to 5th below 50 MPH. Is this valid and should I avoid it?

RE: 5th gear squeal.
That's valid but I'd still be cautious...although it could be just the way the gear is cut it could also be something else more serious in the transmission. I know that a whining noise is fairly common for early V Star Motorcycles so I initially think this may be the case BUT if your riding and it just doesn't feel right then I'd have it looked at. Hopefully it's not the transmission because that could be a bigger issue.

RE: 5th gear squeal.
I would check oil and final drive fluid in the rear.

live life full throttle....2008 vstar custom.

RE: 5th gear squeal.
I will echo the comments in here. It may very well be the case that the gear is "too big or too tall" however you want to put it, for low RPMs/low speeds so it is causing that noise. That being said, checking things out makes a lot more sense. If the transmission locked up that would be nasty. So, to be on the safe side check all the fluids. Let us know how it goes and what you find.
