V-star 1300 shifting / idle problems
I own a 1300, it is an 09. When I pull the clutch in to change gear the motor revs up. I am sure it is not the throttle that is sticking...but it seems to take time for it to return to idle when I rev it or when I shift. Any ideas?

RE: V-star 1300 shifting / idle problems
Hi, and welcome to the forums. I've got a couple of questions.

How long has it been doing this with this bike.
Any modifications done to the bike?
Does it "hang" if you just rev it a bit sitting still in neutral or only when riding it?
Is the bike fully warm when it is doing it?

It could be a throttle cable sticking or throttle mechanism. Have you checked to make sure that there are no "clogs" in the throttle cable or anything like that and everything is smooth.

Thanks,

Matt

RE: V-star 1300 shifting / idle problems
In addition to the above questions we'll need to explore the carb/fuel-system and also let me ask you this.
How many miles are on the bike?
How long have you been riding it or did you get it new in 09?

RE: V-star 1300 shifting / idle problems
The bike has about 12,000 miles on it. I have checked around the carbs for vacuum leaks, but haven't found any. It is stock, no modifications. I got it used in 09 with about 4,000 miles on it from a friend.

Hey buddy, I think everyone else is correct. I think you're going to have to take off the carb and inspect it and take a look at what is going on. Good luck!

RE: V-star 1300 shifting / idle problems
I have gotten the carbs off the bike. What should I be looking for/at next? I assume to see if they are gummed up or something like that?

What cleaners or stuff do you recommend on cleaning things if it is gummed up?

RE: V-star 1300 shifting / idle problems
There is Berrymans B12 Chemtool, Seafoam, Gumout, and others. Those 3 immediately come to mind. I know Berrymans B12 Chemtool is highly recommended, but Seafoam is also good stuff. you're looking to see if it is gummed up, and residue, sticky stuff, things like that.

RE: V-star 1300 shifting / idle problems
Thanks Godfather for the advice. I've got them off and am going to pickup some of that stuff. Do I have to get it online or will local auto parts places have it like Advance or Autozone or even Walmart? Lastly, does anyone know anything about balancing the carbs?

I'm running short on time, but if I don't write an post on balancing the carbs soon then please PM and I'll take some time and do it.

RE: V-star 1300 shifting / idle problems
Pulling in the clutch has no bearing on the engine RPM sounds like you are somehow turning the throttle at the time you are shifting. This problem is very hard to figure out without seeing the problem first hand.

1300 has no choke fuel injected.

Hi, I have a 2007 1300, it doesn't have a carb, it's fuel injected. Mine had idle problems and I changed the spark plugs and it solved the problem.

RE: V-star 1300 shifting / idle problems
He keeps talking about carbs maybe it is not a 1300 might be a 1100 that would account for the speeding up problem.
