Anchor What oil should I use for my Vstar 1100?
hey all, love the forum so far. Seems to be growing a bit. Anyways, I just bought a 2002 v star 1100 from a friend of mine. Hes got about 14k miles on it and has used AMSOIL. I can't find it for the life of me and am thinking about using Mobil 1. Are there any clutch issues to be concerned about if i use Mobil 1? will synthetic oil hurt the bike?

using synthetic oil can actually cause slipping if your riding aggresively.

Any of the 15w50, 20w50, and 10w40 aren't energy conserving oils but if you want to make sure then look on the back of the label. The api service circle says energy conserving if it is and those are the ones to stay away from.

RE: What oil should I use for my Vstar 1100?
I've been using Mobil 1 15/50 since my 2nd oil change and i'm creeping up on 25k on the clock. Haven't had a single problem at all with any slipping issues. Only oil related problem i'm having is a minor leak coming from the drain plug, needs a new washer for the plug.

Only issue with changing oils is whatever oil brand you decide to go with try to keep using the same viscosity your friend was using, or the closest viscosity you can find to what he was using.

RE: What oil should I use for my Vstar 1100?
I've used AMSOIL in one of my cars before, they come highly recmomended. They also make great air filters for cars as I understand it, not sure if they make air filters (high performance for these model of bikes).

How much was it if you don't mind me asking, and what mileage interval are you going to be changing it at? I know the full synthetics can last longer than the traditional oils.

Synthetic oil should be fine. The only time you might have to worry about synthetic oil is if you do an engine rebuild--sometimes you have to seat the rings and they recommend using traditional oil for the first round or so. But I'd always ask your engine builder what he recommends in that case.

Re: What oil should I use for my Vstar 1100?
Wondering if its ok to use amsoil 10w40 high zinc 100% synthetic. The front label on the bottle doesn't say Motorcycle oil but on back it includes motorcycle with car etc in small print.
I have a few of them but hesitant to use on the bike.

RE: What oil should I use for my Vstar 1100?
I don't think you'll have any problems. To be sure (since I am not a chemist and don't play one on TV) you might ask your Amsoil dealer what they recommend. I can't imagine it being any problems at all. Amsoil makes high quality oil and I know a lot of guys who run high boost on turbocharged engines and they love it. But every mechanic / engine builder has their preference. If it includes motorcycle on the back I wouldn't be nervous to use it. This might help your (if it is what I think it is) lifter tick.

RE: What oil should I use for my Vstar 1100?
I agree. I don't think you'll have any problems running Amsoil, and if it says on the bottle that it can be used for a motorcycle, then I think you'll be fine. Synthetic motor oils are really nice and I always use them because even though it is a bit more money, I really feel it is worth it and have noticed less engine noise (especially when warming up). Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I will give it a shot then. May be some time next week hoping it will fix that ticking on the side. They are expensive for sure.

Re: What oil should I use for my Vstar 1100?
So I put 10w40 100% synthetic High Zinc Amsoil on my 08' 1100 Custom and rode about 500 miles .It solved two problems. Now Neutral is easier to be found and slippage of second gear is over. Felt a difference in engine sound right away...much smoother. Being impressed for first 200 miles, I switched to Regular gas for next 300 or so miles. Just a couple of backfiring as usual but nothing much.
I used to put premium gas for past several month to avoid lots of backfiring with Regular. I was using YamaLube 10w40 as per Yamaha dealer dude. Now he won't see me buying their oil anymore. I will try Amsoil 20w50 Motorcycle oil on next change.
Overall, great experience, very cool stuff. :)
Ticking is still there. :(

Good to hear Zag! Yeah, it is expensive but good stuff. I wonder if the ticking will go away after some more mileage. If not, I guess it will be valve adjustment time when you go and have it serviced over the winter.

RE: What oil should I use for my Vstar 1100?
I will give another shout out to Amsoil. My buddy has a turbocharged Mitsubishi EVO that puts out over 500 horsepower. He uses Amsoil for it and swears by it. I think I am going to start using it in my bike and maybe even my Toyota 4 Runner too. It is expensive, but if it makes the engine last another 20-30k miles or longer (100k) it is definitely worth it.
