I ride an 09 1100 custom and it's time for me to get a new set of tires. I'm wanting to get you all's opinions on what you'd recommend. I don't do a lot of riding in the rain or anything like that. And it is hot down here in Texas, so there you have it.
I just purchased a set of metzler 880's for my vstar 1100. Awesome! Very comfortable ride, feel very confident in their ability to stick to the road, will definitely purchase again when the time comes. I ride in Florida so I am with you on it being hot, and lucky for me it rains every afternoon! Great tires, can't say enough good things about them.
Thanks. I'll check those out. About how many miles would you say you've put on them. That is pretty impressive saying you'll already buy again and when just got them. Sounds like a winner. Thanks
Around 200-300 miles. I apologize its not a whopping number. I am providing my opinion on ride quality so far. As far as tread life goes, my riding partner only uses metzler specifically for their lasting tread. Stay away from Avon, I've not heard good things.
No need to apologize my friend. :) And if metzlers have good tread life all the better. Ride quality is really important to me! thanks again.
I have used Bridge stone Extra good mileage 12,000km rear more on the front, but don't feel grippy in the wet, although they never let go, I just wasn't comfortable. I have used 3 sets of Dunlop 404 and am very happy 15,000km front and a little less from the rear, feel great wet or dry, I would like to try the Metzellers or the Pirrelli, but here in Oz they are a bit dear.Smile
Good thread. I'm in the same boat and needing some tires for my 950 soon. This info helps tremendously. Thanks everyone.
P.S. I would also recommend running a couple of PSI higher than the standard printed on the plate on the frame.

What size did u go with? What rating as well? Hr,B,R???
My 1100 has the Pirelli MT66 Tires on it, I have around 6,000 on them now and I'm really happy with them.
Yea, I went with the metzeler 880 marathon. I got a lil wider than stock with a 180/60 16hr. I like it. Sad thing is that I really thought my front tire was fine but the new tire on the back suggests otherwise lol. Time to order a new one, lol.
So boob, the clearances with the 180mm are OK? I've thought about that size but I dont think... maybe I dont remember...I've heard anyone say anything about going to a 180
Yea mcrom... I think it's fine. I went 180/60 so it's a touch shorter but if u look at my inner fender vs tire width, there is plenty of room. Now, I have the 950 and u have "custom" fenders. Measure 2x cut 1x... That's my opinion.
OK. Thanks for the input dude! I bet I've got maybe half this season on my rear left and ill be checking the 180 out
I would like to comment, if your a large rider with heavy loads make sure you at least stick with the oem dunlops, I had mine on for nearly 30k miles. My wife and I are larger than life people maxing the weight of the tires by a bit. With that said the new 880's are 170 bucks and a smooth ride. I live in Washington State. I had no complaints with rain on the dunlops
