Air Ride...Brain Storming Session !
Ok, everyone is invited to express opinions, collaborate with ideas.
Here is my crazy idea....
So, some people has attempt to install an "air ride" in theirs 1100s using an small 12v compressor and pneumatic cylinder.
Although they were successful in the install an idea... It never really worked.
Two reasons:
-All of the cylinders tried developed a leak

-Even though the set up would work to get the bike up and down it didn't have much suspension (damping) ..pretty much just adjusted the height of the bike..it was a fancy rigid :)

Now, here is my idea !
There are true air suspensions for Harleys and many have done their own using a small air compressor and Monroe air shocks made for corvette cars.
So, that air shock wouldn't work in a vstar because the mounts are different.....
My idea is to take the mount off an OEM vstar shock and weld it to one side of the air shock...
If this can be accomplished the rest of the set up wouldn't be difficult at all.

Thoughts? Ideas? Opinions?

Answered my own question from the other forum. Sounds like an interesting idea, but I'll have to read and listen since I'm not very good at building anything on my own. Good luck with it

Can you modify the bike mount to accept the unmodified air shock from the Harley? Huh

RE: Air Ride...Brain Storming Session !
Hmmmm. Back in the day I had several buddies who ran air shocks on their cars. Seemed like every one of those rode and handled really rough. Granted, they probably had the pressure jacked up... I would caution that you not buy a cheap air shock. Air shocks have a hydraulic damper that works just like a regular shock plus the "air spring" part. On some of the cheap ones they save a few bucks by not having the "air spring" part damped by the hydraulic part. Those tend to be "bouncy" (almost like having a bad shock).

People really like the Monroe shocks...Like I said they are made to fit corvettes so, I researched the corvette forums and they are well recommended.
As John explains they do have the damper that makes the ride more confy..

well seen few road stars with air ride, surely could adapt it to the 1100 also. here is a few links.

i ccan set you up with a really nice setup that uses a tiny air bag ,,i did the setup on mine and really love it,,,i think its way better than an air cylnder setup because there is no pogo effect,,email me at hilomx6@charter.net if your interested my shop site is http://www.myspace.com/illicitcustoms

Man...that kitty must be overdosed on 'ludes to be that calm... LOL

We now have a whole new category of suspension systems to investigate...

@keith
Thanks for the links
What they are doing is buying air-rider kits and those go for over $900
Out of question for me ... Especially since I don't like to pay for stuff I don't really need :)
I think I can get my idea going for about $150 if I get all the the components separately...

@maustarman damn, yeah out of question, so thinkin you can get a monroe air shock and weld on our shock ends then put in a 12volt compressor, the better compressors are not cheap, but can do like my dad did when had air shocks on the car, just aired up when hauling something from the house compressor, then aired down when not heavy.

@Keith I'm planning to get one of the compressors they use for the HDs about 60 bucks plus all the fittings, solenoid etc.
I scored a monroe shock and not I'm hopping to find a oem shock to shop off.
@Mr RCOM
Very interesting ... You got me researching this for like an hour.... Unfortunately it seems it would be to short

aww thats too bad i was trying to find the cheapest option.

i know your monroe shock is probably way different then what im about to mention but my my wifes pontiac we have monroe air shocks. basically the air part is just a load leveling/assist feature. as in you cant let all the air out and itll lower the car. hopefully you didnt get one like that
