Peice of nonsense starter
silly thing bagan to have issues starting, it would crank hang crank hang start. then it would crank hand crank hang click. so i finally took the starter apart, ill post a pic later of the dirty lil bastard. Right now I got it all put back together and now the damn started just spins free when you hit the button.

took it back off and you can spin the gear but when you try to spin the armature itself its takes a great deal of force.

yeah, the 1100 is known to have messed up starters, luckily i have not had that issue yet.

RE: Peice of nonsense starter
so what did you do to it, just cleaned it up with some parts cleaner and wire brush?

Hmmm...is all that gray stuff just dust from the brushes wearing down or was there something else worn, too?

Also, I don't know if it's true but they say if you always start in neutral and with the clutch in there is less chance of the starter taking early retirement. It makes sense because I know the few times I've started my 650 in 1st when cold it lurches a little even with the clutch fully in. I try to remember to shift to neutral before starting now, every time.

RE: Peice of nonsense starter
@Keith that's exactly what i did. Contact cleaner works wonders on these things. Had to file down 2 of the brushes to free them up but they are a really soft metal.

@OldePhart there was some other corrosion as well, some evidence of moisture incursion. As for the starting, I'm always in neutral which i recommend just for safety, like you said yours will still lurch if cold. I dont worry too much about having the clutch pulled in even though the BRC will teach you that for safety as well. I wonder if there has been any legitimate research on the subject.
