1100 classic/custom gas tank question
hello everybody,

I was curious if anyone knows if the gas tank from an 1100 classic will fit on a 1100 custom? I am in the middle of making my custom into a sporty bagger and want a separate tank to paint so I can have the option of putting the bike back to stock. I just want to make sure the tanks are interchangeable before I buy another. any info is appreciated.

thanks!

I bought a tank from a 2005 1100 Classic and it fit right in on my '03 1100 Custom. Slightly different paint schemes, black/charcoal and black/copper.

I plastidip the whole bike black anyway so I didn't care, but just be careful on the leg part of the tank because it will peel right off quickly.

I hate to sound stupid, but what is Plasti Dip? I've seen that come up in a few threads.

Re: 1100 classic/custom gas tank question
It's a removable rubbery paint, originally used to dip tools and have a rubber grip. They made it into a spray paint, comes in a can for about $6 at any Lowes or Home Depot. Matte black is the most popular but they came with a lot of different colors and finishes like me tallies and glossifier. Inexpensive temporary paint job, can be peeled right off but it's still durable and protects original paint. Also look up hydrographics... cool stuff!

What's the main reason for using it besides for tools? Someone on here was using it to help paint their helmet with lace. Thanks for the reply!

Re: 1100 classic/custom gas tank question
I use it to paint my tank and fenders flat black. I like the look but if I ever get tired of it, I can just peel it right off. A lot of people use it on automotive wheels. Main thing is that you can paint something and always be able to go back to original paint easily. It also protects it. Look up videos of it on youtube, some really neat stuff on there. It's also very inexpensive to do. Here's a pic of the parts I painted, before and after...

@dreamweaver PlastiDip rules! lol with as much as I use it you would think I owed shares in the company.

I love it because you can spray it onto any metal or plastic surface and Later peel it off without damage to the original finish. I have done my bike literally a dozen times without any damage to the original finish

Black base with silver metallizer and glossifier makes an awesome gunmetal gray finish for $20.

RE: 1100 classic/custom gas tank question
One bit of advice...whatever top finish you're going to end with, make sure you build up a thick enough layer of the basic Plasti-dip to make it pretty thick (like any spray paint, several thin coats, not one thick and drippy one). I've only worked with it on some small pieces and more as an experiment than anything but if you don't get a thick enough coat of the base it will be harder to remove...it still won't damage the underlying finish, it will just not peel smoothly like it does if it's thick enough to hold together as you peel it.

Also, I've not used it on a tank but a couple of our regulars who have say it will tend to wear and peel where your legs rub against it (I think our lovely Plasti-Dip Queen @Kimsnot never leaves any given paint job on long enough to find out if this happens for her :big-skat-eating-grin: )

1100 classic/custom gas tank question
lol @oldephart oh soo many responses come to mind however I don't want to get kicked out of here. lol.

your right about several thin coats. thicker finish will peel easier if it's think you can hear it a little and rub it off.

the only problem I had with wear from the gas pump. here in California we have annoying rubber hoses over the gas nozzle that if its not pushing against the tank it won't pump so I have to push that up while watching not to over flow tank since the gas will eat plastidip.

Typically, how long will this plasti-dip finish last, weeks? months? years? and can you go over it later with another coat / color if you want?
