1100 transmission problems?
Hey all, I'm new here so hopefully I can get smoe help. I've been having an issue with 3rd gear...its been going on for about 3-4 months now.

My 3rd gear does one of several things. It works, sometimes it pops out of gear within a few feconds of changing gears--normally when I am upshifting, doesn't seem to do it when I down shift. it just goes into neutral and I can't get it into third gear.

Seems to happen when I just start the bike, and after driving it for a bit it doesn't happen.

Do you know what it could be? Oil? Does the clutch need adjusted? I don't know where to begin. I hate to take it in to the dealer, but if I have to I have to.

RE: 1100 transmission problems?
I've heard of other people have this same issue, and what they worked on was adjusting the shift linkage. Most of the time this fixes the issue. If that doesn't solve your problem you may have a shift fork that is bent. The only thing is if you have a bent shift fork it will happen every time you shift...or at least it should happen every time . When you shift try doing it a bit faster and "smoother" if that makes sense. Try all these things first, because you don't want to have to replace a shift fork. There are also ball sockets on the linkage. Check to make sure these are not damaged or starting to wear a lot.

I agree on the above advice. You need to take a look at the shift linkage and adjust it if necessary. If the shift linkage gets off just a little bit it can cause major problems. Also, this is the easiest thing to look at first. A bent shift fork will be more expensive and require more work.

Check the shift linkage when you can and let us know what you find.

thanks.

Okay, I am going to look into the shift linkage. I'll let you know what I find. I talked to my buddy the other day...he is a mechanic, and he said he can help me if I run into any problems. Thanks guys for the help.

RE: 1100 transmission problems?
Thanks for the help guys. I got ahold of a manual, actually a Clymers manual and followed the directions on adjusthing the shift linkage. My buddy also came over and helped me make sure I did everything correctly. I can report back and say that so far the bike is shifting MUCH better now. Very smooth and doesn't seem to have any issues.

THanks for the suggestions everyone.

Just wanted to report back as I haven't been here in a while. Still shifting smoothly after making the adjustments I did before!
